About Ricky Balona
BIOGRAPHY
I was born in South Africa, lived in France for 10 years, and then returned to Cape Town, where I married my wonderful wife. We have three amazing children. I moved to New Zealand in 2008.
MILITARY BACKGROUND
As a Veteran, I feel that some of our experiences were life-changing.
Served in 1 Parachute Battalion. South African Defence Force. 1982-1983, then several “call-ups” to 3 Para, 44 Parachute Brigade. French Foreign Legion 1990-1995. Served in the 2nd Parachute Regiment.
WRITING JOURNEY
History and stories of war have always captivated me. I write to explore the human experience within these intense moments, sometimes drawing from my own life, other times weaving together historical research and first-hand accounts from veterans who were there.
When I write, I fully immerse myself in the world of my characters. I imagine what they see, feel, and endure—how they respond to the chaos around them. It’s important to me that every story feels lived-in and emotionally honest.
Writing is more than a passion; it’s a lifelong pursuit. I’m constantly learning, refining my craft, and striving to tell stories that resonate. Thank you for joining me on this journey.
